I’ve been thinking quite a bit about blogvertising, a.k.a. monetizing of a blog.
I think it’s remarkable that there are bloggers out here making thousands of dollars from paid advertising on, or because of their blog traffic. And, in full disclosure, I’m far from having that kind of readership.
I don’t think I want to have the kind of site that has a lot of advertising. Yes, I have some, and I do get excited when my adsense stats grow. And I do recomend certain products that I happen to be affiliated with… but only those that I research and actually believe to be of value.
I’d like to see each of my sites or blogs generate enough income to pay for hosting & domain renewal. That’s my base goal, for advertising. Sustainability.
If, over the course of the year, they provide enough income to buy a geeky gadget, or add to some charities, or future entrepreneurship fund, that’s a great bonus.
But I’d rather my online writing provide a good service to folks that wander my way. It could be for information, or entertainment value, or maybe shining a new light on a new perspective of an old issue, as long as folks get something out of it, I’m happy.
And if I get something out of it, I’m happy. New clients, new projects, support for living my life as an independent creative, educator, and coach, would be wonderful.
But even if my “five readers” read something here, or anywhere I write, and get inspired into entrepreneurship, or creativity, or some other way, that’s payment for my Soul.
That is something no advertiser could ever offer.

I agree with your post. Adsense works great on blogs and it is so exiting to see a little income :-)
