The other day on Oprah, Dr. Oz talked about Alzheimer’s and how the country of India has an exceedingly low rate of Alzheimer’s disease. Could it really be something in the tumeric and curry?
The disease is not a normal part of aging, but is the leading cause of dementia in people over 65.
Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive, degenerative disorder that attacks the brain’s nerve cells, or neurons, resulting in loss of memory, thinking and language skills, and behavioral changes.
Symptoms can happen much earlier, when the disease inhibits the function of the neurons and they ultimately die. When Alzheimer’s disease kills cells in the hippocampus, it causes short term memory loss, but when it progresses to neurons dying in the cerebral cortex language and motor function decline. You can learn more about the disease by visiting the AFA through the link in this post.
Until there is a cure, and with preventative measures are still in their infancy, we need organizations like the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. AFA is an organization that both supports caregivers and people living with Alzheimer’s and supports research and the search for the cure.
“To provide optimal care and services to individuals confronting dementia, and to their caregivers and families—through member organizations dedicated to improving quality of life.”
While you’re shopping for gifts for loved ones, this holiday season, consider gifts that give more. What if your holiday gift could be the one that saves millions of people? What if we’re at the tipping point of Alzheimer’s research and treatment and the few extra dollars from the necklace, bracelet, or Alzheimer’s caregiver training program dvds are precisely what’s needed to finish the research and find the cure?
All of the proceeds from the purchases from the Alzheimer’s Foundation Online store go to support the programs and services of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America and its member organizations. If you know of someone that has lived through Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, I know you’ll want to do what you can to help the cause.
