Greenhouse Business Model
Hey, welcome back! Did you remember to join our newsletter? Did you know that paid members receive tons of cool freebies and discounts?
I love my life.
I had the extreme privilege of taking a tour of some secret greenhouses. The owners of two farm-style stores have chosen to hide the location of their greenhouses, so that customers don’t try to turn their agricultural location into a direct-purchase location.
It was incredibly fascinating to have the one of the owners himself, show how they start the seeds, and grow and amazing variety of annuals, perennials, vegetables, and even fruit.
What was probably the most fascinating was how the business grew organically.
One of their suppliers couldn’t get them the tomato plants as early as their customers wanted. So they started sprouting them, themselves.
Yearly, they’d add more varietals, and when they ran out of space, they’d add another greenhouse.
Also, there was an amazing amount of recycling, and ingenuity going on. From using one furnace to shield several greenhouses from the Midwestern nights, to customers bringing the starter trays back, recycling them for the next crop.
What a home based business (aside from their stores, that is)! They work very hard for nine months out of the year, and take a hiatus in the winter, for some Southern travel.
