In my recent hike, then drop in the green toolbar game, I felt the “Yay!” and “Awww.” Like the rest of the net, how Google has changed their algorithm this time has been on my mind.

Today I’m going through each of my affiliate-ad-supplemental income generators and assessing whether I’m keeping them or not.

When I logged in to LinkWorth and read the blog post explaining “Penalizing” vs. “Penasizing” it made sense. (The latter term had a spell change, due to this being a PG blog.)

Penalizing happens when your results in the search engine (SERP) are penalized due to you having a ratio of sponsorships vs organic content that the search engines deem unworthy. Your site is then bumped back in search engine results.

Penasizing is when you experience shrinkage in the green Google PR bar that you may have in your browser. This does likely have to do with your paid content. However, it does not negatively effect your search engine standing.

So, as long as your organic search results stay good, the PR is only mildly relevant.

And remember: It’s not the length of your PR that counts - it’s what you do with it!

The question is, will that be all or is there more coming? This could be just the warning before penalties in the searches.

Hence why I’m taking a hard look at which monetization strategies are working and which are just anchors pulling the site down.

Overall, the site isn’t where I make my living - Its where I make supplemental income to afford to do more pro-bono work and still pay my mortgage. So there’s a trade-off.
